For students
Join a class
On Classes, type the Class code your teacher gave you and choose Join. (Command:
class.join.)
Or open the class invite link your teacher sent: it shows the class and a Join button. If you aren't signed in, sign in (or create an account) on that page first; you come straight back to join.
Or your teacher invites you by email: the class appears at the top of your Classes page ("Invitation: …") with Join and Decline. If you don't have an account yet, the invitation email has a link (or your teacher sends you the link in a message): open it within 7 days, type your name and a password, and choose Create account and join.
Example: Mona gets the email "Invitation to join Biology". She has no account yet, so she taps the link, chooses a password, and lands on the Biology Stream.
To leave a class, open its People tab and choose Unenroll from this class.
(Command: class.leave.)
Example: Ali's teacher writes w4x6ykf on the board. Ali opens + Join a class, types W4X6YKF (capital letters don't matter) and chooses Join. "Science" appears on his Classes page.
Find your work
- To-do (top of every page) lists your unfinished work in all your classes, soonest due first,
then the work you've done. To see one class only, choose it under Class at the top and
choose Show ("All classes" shows everything again). (Command:
todo.listwithclass.) - Calendar (top of every page) shows one week, day by day: the work due each day in all your
classes, with the time it's due and its status, and your classes' live lessons: choose
Join Zoom meeting under one to join it. Next and Back move a week at a time,
Today comes back to this week, and Class shows one class only. Work without a due date
isn't on it. The week starts on the day your school chose (Sunday unless your administrator
changed it). (Command:
calendar.week.) - In a class, the Stream shows the next few things due, and Classwork lists everything, grouped by topic.
- Live lessons: if your teacher added a video meeting, Join Zoom meeting (or Join video meeting) is on the class's Stream and Classwork pages. It opens the meeting in a new tab.
- Each piece of work shows its status: Assigned, Missing (past its due date), Turned in, Done late, Returned or Graded.
Example: On Sunday Ali opens Calendar to plan his week: Science live lesson on Sunday and Tuesday at 10:00, a quiz on Tuesday and the plant cell drawing on Thursday at 23:59. At 10:00 he chooses Join Zoom meeting under the live lesson.
Example: On Monday Ali opens To-do: "Label the parts of a plant cell – due Thursday" is at the top, so he starts with that.
Hand in an assignment
Open the assignment. Under Your work:
- Add what you need:
- Your answer: type text and choose Save. (Command:
submission.save.) - Add a link or file: add a web link, or upload a file (up to 25 MB; programs such as
.exefiles are refused). (Command:submission.attach.) - Take a photo (on a phone or tablet): choose Step 1: Open the camera, take the photo, check that "Photo ready" appears, then choose Step 2: Add photo. Handy for work on paper.
- Remove takes off a file or link you added. (Command:
submission.detach.)
- Your answer: type text and choose Save. (Command:
- If your teacher gave you your own copy of a file (marked "copy of the teacher's file"), open it, do the work on your device, then use Replace your copy of … with a new version to upload your finished version.
- Choose Turn in. (Command:
submission.turnIn.)
To change something after turning it in, choose Unsubmit, make the changes and turn it in
again. Work turned in after the due date is marked "Done late". (Command: submission.unsubmit.)
Example: Ali types his answer, takes a photo of his drawing with Take a photo, and chooses Turn in. He notices a mistake, chooses Unsubmit, fixes it and turns it in again before Thursday.
Answer a question
- Short answer: type your answer and choose Turn in. If your teacher allows it, you see your classmates' answers afterwards and can Reply to them; you can delete your own replies. You can change your answer only if your teacher allows it.
- Multiple choice: choose one option and Turn in.
- Checkboxes: tick every option that applies and Turn in.
After answering a multiple-choice or checkbox question you may see the class summary (how many
chose each option). (Commands: question.answer, question.reply, question.deleteReply.)
Example: Ali answers "Which part of the cell makes food?" with Chloroplast and chooses Turn in. He then sees how many classmates chose each option.
Take a quiz
A quiz assignment has several questions on one page.
- Answer each question. Choose Save answers whenever you like; you can come back later.
- Choose Turn in when you've finished. (Command:
quiz.save.) - You can Unsubmit to change answers until your teacher returns the quiz. A returned quiz can't be changed.
When your teacher returns it you see your grade, the mark for each question and, if your teacher allows it, which answers were right.
Example: Ali answers two questions of "Cells quiz", chooses Save to come back later, finishes the last one in the evening and chooses Turn in.
Grades and comments
- When your teacher returns your work, its page shows Grade: … out of ….
- If an assignment has a Rubric, its page shows it: what your teacher grades (the criteria) and the levels of each, so you know what's expected before you turn it in. Once your work is returned, the levels your teacher chose are marked (chosen for you), with your rubric score. They stay next to your grade if you hand the work in again, until your teacher returns it anew.
- The Your grades tab lists all your work in the class with its status and grade, and your overall grade if your teacher shows it.
- Private comments on a piece of work are only between you and your teachers.
(Command:
submission.comment.) - Class comments under a post or a piece of work are seen by the whole class, if your teacher
allows comments. (Command:
post.comment.) If there's no box to comment or post, your teacher has turned that off for you or for the class; private comments still work. You can delete your own posts and comments, but your teachers may still be able to see what they said. - Guardians: your teachers can invite a parent or guardian to get email summaries of your missing and upcoming work and class news (never your grades). They're listed under Your guardians in Settings.
- If your teacher allows it, you can post on the Stream too, with a link or a file (Add a
link or file), and Edit your own posts afterwards. (Commands:
post.announce,post.edit.)
Example: When the essay comes back, Ali sees "Grade: 8 out of 10" and the rubric levels marked "(chosen for you)". He writes a private comment to ask how to improve his evidence.
